Madrid's Mayor Fiddles Air Pollution Results

SUMMARY

Madrid's mayor was extremely happy with the decrease of air pollution since he has been in office. Even though the way he seemed to be lowering the pollution was by moving the machines, which measured the air pollution, from busy streets to parks and gardens. The prosecuter for environmental affairs notice that something was up and had some other people run their own tests which showed that the pollution levels have stayed the same not gotten any better. The mayor claims that this is a plot by the Socialist government before the elections and he believes that none of this would have happened if he had not given any tax breaks to diesel drivers. Even though the air pollution in Madrid is terrible that have yet to really do any changes about it. He has neglected to meet the acceptable levels of nitrogen for the air, introduce bikes or any plan of making this situation better. London also has the same pollution problem, but other than Madrid, London is comitted to change their situation.

REFLECTION

I find that what the mayor did was completly unessary and to try to cover it up by saying its the governments problem is a little low. I think the worst part though is the fact that even after he was caught and denied it, the mayor still made no effort to change the amount of air pollution. Almost ignoring the matter. I believe they should at least make a slight effort to change the air conditions no matter what they do.

QUESTIONS

What do think is making such a great amount of air pollution in Madrid?

What do you think the mayor could be doing to help the air conditions?

Why do you think the mayor decided to move the machines in the first place?

  1. 1) i think all of the busy streets and factories are making all of the air pollution in Madrid.
    2) i think that the mayor could actually go into action and get people introduced with bikes. also he could probably offer some kind of benefit to carpooling to cut down the burning of gas.
    3) he moved the machines to a more open space where the pollution wasn't concentrated so the readings would appear lower

  2. Sorry guys I didn't realize that everything was supposed to go on this specific page. I made a completely different post. I have had my blog up for about a week now.

I was shocked after reading about what the mayor did. Obviously it was him that was careless about the environment so by trying to blame it on the government was very surprising. I don't think he realizes how bad it will eventually get and it will harm the city of Madrid.

    2. The mayor could be try to persuade people to go green. The people should walk, bike and try other ways of getting around instead of driving everywhere. If there are hybrids in Madrid, he should try to get people to buy those also.

    3. The mayor probably moved the machines to the parks and gardens because it would make him look better like he was actually trying to prevent pollution. And, the readings would obviously be lower because the cars and gas are all on the streets.

  3. i forgot to do a reflection........ here it is

i think it is wrong what the mayor did. it was lazy of him to just move the machines other than actually fixing the problem. then after being proved wrong he blames it on the government. that is wrong and i think that he should put his words into action and actually prevent air pollution in madrid

  4. I find it completely disgusting that the mayor had the nerve to lie to his entire city about air quality. It was very selfish of him to act in the way that he did. Not only was he lying, but air quality isn’t anything small. It is a very important problem that needs to be dealt with. Some action needs to be taken and the mayor of Madrid is not taking the initiative.
Question 3) Why do you think the mayor decided to move the machines in the first place?
I think the mayor decided to move the machines because he wanted the Madrid citizens to think that he was a good mayor. He thought that if he moved them to where they would be less noticeable, people would think that the situation was improving. In reality, there was no improvement. He thought that he would be able to outsmart the citizens, but in the end he was outsmarted. And he looked like a fool.
