Hawaii Proposes Legislation to Bring Devastating Fish Farms Under Control

Summary: There were two bills introduced Monday do to the fight the State Legislature has against the fish factory farms. The first bill has to do with the uncarefull expansion of the farms and the second was to make sure the factories took a full analysis of their farms and what changes they are causing the environment. Wenonah Hauter stated that farming was linked with diseases, parasites, and pollution. Hawaii became place for factory farm fishing 20 years ago and every since they have been exspanding without consern.

Reflection: I'm glad about the bills passed. To know that someone is actually paying attention to what is happening and doing something about it is reassuring. After what we have learned in class about the affects of factory farms and the dangers resulting in their mistakes, it is reassuring to know that the farmers need to be aware of what is happening. Reading this it reminded me of the video of the salmon and if they were to escape it could potentially end the race of the salmon to exstinction. Although the fish are not GMOs the actions of the factory fish farms could be very dangerous to our life. The farms need to make sure they are safe and not going to let any fish free.

What are some effects of fish escaping from farming pens?
What do you think should happen to the farms that don't fallow the introduced bills?
Why do you think there is still so much danger in the fish factory farms eventhough they are not GMOs?
If the fish in the farms were GMOs do you think there  would be different bills introduced? If so like what?

  1. I agree with Tori about the bills passing because these farms are effecting us and we don't even realize it. Having learned in class that diseases may be in the food we eat due to the conditions in factory farms, is very scary to me. So knowing that they are doing something about it is very reliving to me. We also learned that factory farms are polluting the earth. Our world is already filled with enough pollution so passing a bill regarding the expansion of factory farms could help a little bit. I just think overall that farmers need to carry out precautions for all these things because we do not know the consequences of factory farms in the future.

    1. Since fish are concentrated in farming pens, they can produce feces which can pollute the water. If these fish get out, bacteria can escape, causing harm to other fish, and eventually cause extinction.
2.Farms that do not follow these bills should be shut down because it is not safe.
    3. I think there is still danger because fish are still kept in blocked off areas and not in their natural habitat. Along with antibiotics that grow more bacteria.
4.No, I don't think different bills would be introduced because GMOs are still being researched and the bills passed already are good enough for now.

  2. I think that it is a very good thing that these bills have been passed. In class we learned about factory farming and the way that they treat their animals. It is absurd how poorly these big businesses treat animals. Being the way that these fish are kept in such tight quarters is not healthy for them. With so many fish in one place, they can very easily spread diseases, even with the antibiotics being used. It is very comforting to know that companies are being forced to study the effects that are being caused on the environment. Without these laws, we know that companies wouldn’t see what they are doing, simply because they don’t care. These will be a good thing towards bettering the conditions in farms.

    2) If farms do not follow these bills, then they should not be allowed to run. These bills have been put into palce for safety, and companies need to keep that in mind and get their eye off the profit.

  3. REFLECTION:

I also think it is a good thing that the bills were passed. Like Kristin said, we learned in class how badly animals are treated in factory farms. Since the animals are packed so closely, they spread disease, and then we eat them. It is scary to know that we may be eating diseased animals. even with all the antibiotics they give them, there is still a slight chance of it. I also agree with Amanda that factory farms are polluting Earth. We learned in class that we only have so much water and we cannot take the chance to pollute it. People need to take caution on what they are doing to avoid pollution. With these bills being passed, we may be able to minimize the pollution rate. overall, the farmers need to watch what they are doing, and like kristin said, better the conditions of the farm.

    QUESTIONS:

    1) there could be major effects if fish escape from the farming pens. In the video we watched in class, we learned about what could happen if the salmon escaped. since they are growing them so rapidly, when the fish escapes, it could ruin the food chain, and the reproduction rate. also it could cause overpopulation of a species.
    2) I also think the farms should be shut down because it is not good for the people, enviornment, etc.

  4. In my opinion I think the bills being pass ed was a good idea aswell. Like what Kyle and Kristin said we learned in class about the dangers in packing animals so closely in factory farms. It is dangerous because the animal are more suseptable to catching disease when the are close together. However, it's kind of ridiculas that these big businesses either haven't realized this or don't care. I mean I know we don't care as much becase they're animals but if you think about it would humans like it if they had to live like that.

    1) The fish escaping coud ruin the food chain and the reproduction rate or overpopulate the area.
    2) They should either have to pay giant fines or bee shut down completely.
