Human Milk From Cows, Like Really?

Summary: Researches in China have been working on genetically modifing cows and now have a herd of 200 cows that produce 'human' milk. It isn't quite human milk but it does have the characteristics of it. However, the milk has a stronger taste that the regular thing. It shouldn't be much longer than 10 years now that this milk will be available in supermarkets. This milk will be better for kids immune systems than the regular cow or goat.

Reflection: What more is there to say about cows producing human milk other that; are you kiddding me? I mean it's one thing to keep them all lock up for their entire live but genetically modifing them so they can do that is just wierd. I honestly don't get what people over like six will be getting from this because after a while human milk isn't doing anything regular milk can do for your body. Something else I don't understand is what the scientists are thinking. Seriouls though, there is no point other than because you can to do that.

Questions:

1) How long is it predicted it will take for this milk to be available for purchase?

2) How big of a herd do the scientists have of cows that produce human milk?

3) How does human milk benefit people?

4) What is the one difference in cow milk and human milk?

  1. I just find this completely weird and gross. I guess if it is healthier for humans it has a way of being better for you then there is some justification for it, but i feel the whole process is just a little extreme for what is happening. All this work for healthier milk. Milk from cows is pretty healthy as it is I dont think it is nescessary to make cows that produce human milk. Honestly it kind of scares me that i product like this will be on the shelves of super markets.
    1. not much longer than ten years
    2. a herd of 200
    3. it is healthier for humans helps the immune system
    4. human milk has a stronger taste

  2. I think that it is so weird that scientists are modifying cows' milk to give it the characteristics of humans'. It is not fair to the cows to be taking their milk, let a lone changing it. I feel that it is unnecessary for there to be human characteristics in milk after they are at the age where they stop getting it from their mom. Although they say there are health benefits, I desagree. I have drank cow milk fo r the longest time, and I think my immune system has been just fine. There are other ways like taking vitamin supplements to keep me healthy.

    1. About 10 years
    2.200 cows
    3. It gives kids a healthier immune system.
    4. Human milk has a stronger taste.

  3. I agree with Jack, Tori and Kristin on how they think that this whole idea is just weird. Milk is already good for humans in the first place. Yes, helping kids have a healthier immune system is great, but going through all of this for just that? To me, I don't think its worth it. What is so great about changing it anyway? Cows already go through enough just producing the milk we drink now. I also agree with Tori about being scared about the GMO milk being on shelves in supermarkets in 10 years. Yes, GMOs have been tested and studied, but to me they just don't seem safe.

    1. In about 10 years is when this milk will be available for purchase.
    2. Scientists have about 200 cows in a herd that produce human milk.
    3. Human milk is healthier because kids' immune systems will be healthier.
    4. A difference between cow and human milk is that human milk has a stronger taste.

  4. REFLECTION:
I also agree with everyone that this idea is weird. i think it is pointless to make "healthier" milk when milk is fine the way it is. i feel bad because the cows live a rough life already, and now we are genitically modifying them? i dont think it is fair to the cows. i agree with amanda in saying that im scared about the milk being on shelves in the super market. i just think this is pointless and they should just leave milk the way it is.
