Solar Plane Makes First International Flight

Apparently a new airplane has been invented power solely by the sun. The first solar power airplane has been invented by Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg in Switzerland. The SolarImpulse piloted by Andre Borschberg will be attempting to fly to Brussels Airport from Payerne airfield in Switzerland. The plane will rise to 3600 meters start for France go over Luxembourg and land in Brussels at approximately 21:00 hours. The flight will take a predicted 12 hours.

To be completely honest it's kind of amazing that this is even possible to do. To power and entire plane that will actually fly on the sun almost sounds impossible. I mean I guess we should be able to do it considering all of the other things we've done with the sun of the years. It does still sound like something that should be from a movie though. It is one thing to be able to power a UAV on the sun but a plane with a pilot inside is just insane.

1) How high in the air did the pilot get the plane?
2) How long will the plane be in the air from Switzerland to Brussels.
3) Do you think this should be possible?
4) Why do you think we didn't try this before now?

  1. Sorry I did get this in before now

  2. SUMMARY:

I agree that it is crazy that we invented a solar plane. I would want to hear the outcome of the flight because i think this is a big opportunity for the world. if this does work, and it works again and again, countries all around the world should consider making this change. So much energy and fuel could be saved by having a solar plane. Millions of planes around the world are flying every day. can you think about how much more fuel we could have if they were all solar? I think this is a huge opportunity for the world. I thank Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg for this brilliant invention.

    QUESTIONS:

    1) 3600 meters
    2) approximately 12 hours
    3) I do think it is possible because we have had so much success with solar panels before.
    4) I think we were just waiting to see if we trusted solar panels, and now we think we perfected it.

  3. I think it is crazy that scientists have been able to figure out a way to power airplanes on solar energy. It is cool that something so big can be powered by the sun. In the news, I have been seeing a lot about how rising gas prices are causing airline tickets to cost more, so this could be a step in the right direction to keeping flying costs manageable. However, it can be kind of scary to think that this plane needs the sun or it will not work.

    1. 3600 meters
    2. 12 hours
    3. It is not very surprising that we can do this because our technology has gotten very good. And now there is a bigger need for alternative energy sources with rising gas prices.
4.Probably because it costs a lot to experiment on planes and it could be dangerous.

  4. i think this is going to be a huge stepping stone for alternative resources and it is a great idea. this helps takes care of oil drilling for fuel and all of the pollution that causes that we learned about in class. like kristen said about the price of tickets and how this like what those scientist did will help with prices for tickets and other extra stuff with planes.

    3. im not too suprised with the solar plane. with all the technology we have now a days just about everything can be powered the way you wish it to be powered.
    4. may not have had the resources or funding that they have now

  5. I agree with everyone that it is pretty interesting as well as amazing that a plane can be powered by solar power. This could definitely make a great difference if they could make a switch to solar powered planes. However, this seems a bit dangerous because this plane will be powered by the sun. If it does work though, they should try to change. This could save a lot of oil and create less air pollution. Like we learned in class, making the switch to alternative energies can make such a difference. We need to change as much as possible.

    2. 12 hours
    3. I think that this should be possible because with our advances in technology today, this is most likely going to work. I just think its a little risky.
    4. I don't think we even thought about using the idea because we have been so focused on other things like oil spills and drilling for more oil when we could have been coming up with more ideas for alternative energies and such.
