Summary:

Just one year after the tragic BP Oil Spill, GOP is pushing to expand offshore drilling for oil. The oil spill one year ago in the Gulf of Mexico, spilled 210,000,000 gallons of oil in to the water, killing tons of marine life and damaging the local fishing-based economies of Louisiana and Florida. The GOP has proposed 3 bills, presenting three plans and conditions for where they wish to begin their drilling. These bills would allow drilling in a wide range of coastal waters through Alaska, the East Coast from Maine through North Carolina, and also in Southern California. This bill also states that if it takes more than thirty days for the government to review drilling permit applications or they will automatically be granted permission.

Reflection:

I think that it is ridiculous for the GOP to be promoting drilling for oil. It has only been one year since such a tragedy of an oil spill, and it seems like they haven’t learned anything. Obviously, if that happened once, it can happen again. In class, I learned that drilling for oil is not only bad for the marine life surrounding it, but burning it is horrible for the environment, because it omits carbon and contributes to green house gases. I also learned that there are many sources of alternative energy, and we should be cutting down on the use of fossil fuels. Instead of spending valuable time and money on drilling for more fossil fuels, companies should be concentrating on improving alternative and renewable energy resources that are more cost effective and better for the environment.

Questions:

1) Do you support fossil fuels?
2) Do you agree with the GOP, in that it is necessary to drill for more oil?
3) What are ways, other than fossil fuels, to provide energy?

  1. I agree with Kristin that it's ridiculous to be promoting drilling for oil. I don't think people realize that oil spills cause a lot of damage. Like we learned in class, drilling and spills ruin the land and the water and burning oil ruins the air quality. Plus, cars and oil refineries put pollutants into the air as well. It seems as though oil has more negatives then positives. Yes, it may run cars, but there are other options. Especially since we are running out on oil and fossil fuels, we need to figure out other options like alternative energies and such, instead of using the fossil fuels we have left.

    1. No, I don't support fossil fuels because they damage the environment greatly and there are other options that are more efficient and safer.

    2. No, I don't agree with the GOP because like I said above, we don't need to think about getting more oil, we need to think about alternative energies and other ideas. Its pointless to drill for oil. We also need to be concerned for the damage caused by the BP oil spill.

    3. Well obviously alternative energies are ways to provide energy. Some of these alternative energies include: nuclear power, solar power, wind power, wave power, tidal power, hydro-electric power, wave power, geothermal power, and biomass. That is a lot of options compared to fossil fuels.

  2. I agree with the girls that it's ridiculas for GOP to want to keep drilling. I mean I think it's something that needs to happen until we find a replacement. But, why don't they start trying to find something to replace it. Instead of trying to drill for oil until it's gone.

    1) I can't not support fossil fuel until we have a definitive replacement for them.
    2) Like i said before unless we have an alternative that can completely take over for oil we need to keep drilling. I don't think it's right but I think it's something that we need to do.

  3. REFLECTION:

I agree with everyone that is it ridiculous for GOP to keep drilling. Most people do not understand the major consequences of spilling oil. The most obvious one is that we have less oil to use. Like we learned in class, we are running out of oil and we need to find an alternative energy source. Another problem is that it destroys the land and habitats for many animals. Although oil is the main resource used today, we need to find another way to power the world.

    QUESTIONS:

    1) I do not support fossil fuels because of all the environmental damage and there are many other alternatives.
    2) I do not support the GOP. We need to focus on a new alternative energy source. not finding more oil we can burn off in a day.
    3) wind power, solar power, hydroelectric power, nuclear power, biomass, geothermal.

  4. i think it is horrible that they are supporting this, but now that it has happened you cant do much about it. All i can say is that if they dont have any back up plans if a spill happens there is no way in heck that they should be allowing this. Even with the bill thats states you must have plans it didnt do anything to the
BP people because they were still unprepared for the disaster that happened. Plus drilling for this oil is just cutting down the little amount of oil we have left. In class we learn about what a small amount we have left compared to the speed we are using it so we really need alternative energies.
    1. no they are bad for the environment and unessesary
    2. no it not nessesary to drill
    3. solar power, wind power, geothermal energy
